The Cyber Academy Presents: Laura Irvine

The Cyber Academy has a long standing tradition of inviting special guests, to speak to our events, and our students. The last two years we hosted some very interesting guests in our SOCLAB at our Merchiston Campus. Our Inspirational Talks were very well received not only by our students, but also by members of the public who attended these events.

The COVID-19 pandemic changed everybody short and medium term plans, and we were no exception. But we are now back with a new perspective on how we continue our activities and deliver some great speakers to the people around us. The rules of these events are simple: the guest speaker defines the topic and the agenda, so that it is something close to their expertise and their heart !

We open the new season with our new series of webinars, “The Cyber Academy Presents:” hosting Laura Irvine as our first guest.

Laura got her LLB (Hons) from the University of Edinburgh in 1994, and her MA Criminology from Keele University a year later. In 2004 Laura graduated with her LLM Human Rights from the University of Strathclyde. She also holds a Dip LP as a practicing solicitor.

She is the Head of Regulatory Law and Partner at Davidson Chalmers Stewart LLP, Criminal Solicitor Advocate and Accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a Specialist in Freedom of Information and Data Protection Law.

Her ‘claim to fame’ is that she was part of the only legal team in the UK to have successfully overturned a fine imposed by the ICO under the Data Protection Act 1998. As a specialist data protection lawyer, Laura has provided data protection and information law advice to a wide variety of clients, in varying sectors and of all shapes and sizes — both public and private sector.

She wrote the Law Society of Scotland’s Guide to the GDPR and is a co-founder of PODs (Protectors of Data Scotland) the pre-eminent group of data protection enthusiasts in Scotland. She is also a board member of the Scottish Business Resilience Centre (SBRC) which works with Government, Police and other public sector bodies to assist the private sector in Scotland to remain resilient.

Laura has been around The Cyber Academy for a few years now. She has joined us as a speaker in our recent conferences and her presentations in GDPR and data protection attracted a great deal of attention and resulted in very positive feedback.

Data Protection: You have been warned !

I was honoured to work with Laura in a professional capacity, before I joined The Cyber Academy.

Laura will present a webinar looking at some of the new technologies that she has been experiencing and advising on during lock down, so that we can continue to engage in the workplace and socially without being concerned about losing our privacy. She will use a simple case study of an online conference platform and the issues that this raised and how they require to be addressed. This will touch on the following issues:

  • Data controller or data processor?
  • What personal data can you require and/or request
  • What information you need to provide in relation to that personal data
  • Security issues
  • Data Protection Impact Assessments
  • Dealing with breaches

Join us in an exciting and stimulating event about data protection during the pandemic and beyond.

The event is free but you will need to register in advance, so that you will receive your login in details closer to the event.
